Dustin R. Bairfield
Chief Bairfield - a law enforcement leader whose career spans more than three decades of operational service, command responsibility, public administration, and the training of future officers. Chief Bairfield began his law enforcement career with the Pearl Police Department, serving in patrol before moving into narcotics enforcement. During the 1990s, he played a key role in Operation Ivory, working undercover for approximately six months in an investigation that resulted in narcotics indictments against more than 60 defendants. As a K-9 handler, he and his dog, Ricky, earned first place nationally in narcotics detection. He later served as an agent with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and was recognized for his exceptional felony casework. In 1997, Chief Bairfield graduated from the combined Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics academy here at Camp Shelby. Also in 1997, Chief Bairfield was the first law enforcement officer to arrive at the Pearl High School shooting. The Pearl attack became one of the defining early cases in the modern era of school active-shooter incidents and contributed to the study of these attacks and the evolution of modern active-shooter response and training. Chief Bairfield went on to serve as a captain with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, where he supervised patrol, the county jail, dispatch, narcotics, and K-9 operations. Recognizing the importance of developing capable, professional officers close to home, he founded the Lincoln County Law Enforcement Academy and served as its lead instructor. His own professional development includes graduation from the FBI National Academy in 2003, as well as extensive credentials in firearms, less-lethal systems, and tactical instruction. His public service also extended beyond the badge. Chief Bairfield was elected to four consecutive terms as Lincoln County Circuit Clerk. For more than a decade, he participated in the full range of circuit clerk and court activities, overseeing criminal and civil court matters, judgments, and county elections all while keeping his certification active with local law enforcement. In July 2025, he returned to full-time law enforcement as Chief of the Brookhaven Police Department. Under his leadership, violent crime has been reduced by more than 70 percent, fine collections have doubled, and the department has more than doubled in size. At the same time, he has led the implementation of new technology and modern policies and procedures designed to strengthen accountability, officer effectiveness, and public safety. Chief Bairfield holds an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from Hinds Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. His career reflects the qualities this graduation represents: preparation, courage, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to public service.
